The Injuries

So these are the injuries I have. The Bruise picture is from my right hip. This is only one day after the accident, which means it wasn't at it's worst. A day or two after this actually got bigger and bumpier because the seatbelt caused a large amount of contusions and hematomas in my lower abdomin area. This bruise actually goes from my left side (almost to my lower back) over my hip, around my lower abdomin and over to the other hip. It's about 6 - 8 inches at it's widest, and 4 or so inches at it's narrowest.

Heamtoma: Occasionally after an injury, blood collects and pools under the skin (hematoma), giving the skin a spongy, rubbery, lumpy feel. A regular bruise is more spread out and may not feel like a firm lump. A hematoma usually is not a cause for concern. It is not the same thing as a blood clot in a vein, and it does not cause blood clots. - Source Web Md

This next image is of my foot, I am suffering from a broken Navicular. So I'm wearing a big black brace. The bruising on the foot is a little worse these days, and the picture really doesn't do the swelling much justice. There is a large amount of soft tissue damage so the swelling although better (today) is still quite significant.

Finally there is a good amount of swelling in my right knee as well. The orthopedist believes the limited range of motion is do to the swelling and the fluid build up in the knee. There is a slight chance of having a torn PCL ( posterior collateral ligament ), however this is fairly unlikely. Even if it is so, it's not a major injury because people can play in the NFL with torn PCL's with a little rehab. Or so says the doc!

The Orthopedist Appointment

Ok, so here is my latest diagnosis. Luckliy I do not have a displaced facture, otherwise that would have meant surgery. The bad news is I do have a fractured right navicular so here is the list of ramifications.
  • I am probably going to be out for at least a month from my class schedule
  • I have a big black brace on my leg
  • I may be on crutches for the wedding
  • I may have to reschedule the honeymoon
  • I have no idea how I'm going to move from my apartment before Sept 1

  • so that's a list of challenges I have ahead of me, but at least that beats dead! I'm a little tired from running around to see the orthopedic guy and stuff....So i'm off to take a little nap before dinner.

    Morning Report 7/27/2006

Well I'm awake after 10 hours of sleep. I never reaize how tired I am until I go to bed and wake up 10+ hours later. Well...usually it's 6 hours later some Ibuprofen, then another 4 hours. Still soar along my abdomen, and my right foot and ankle looked like an overstuffed sausage. I can't stand sitting around needing constant assistance. I can't even take a shower without help getting in and out. I feel bad for my Brother and Sister-in-law because I have been spending day and night here with my mother and fiance'. It's a pretty big inconvenience to them, even if they do want me here and want to help. Today is my follow up with my doctor, so I will keep you posted on how that goes. I have been missing my classes at the gym too. Trying to keep myself occupied as to not go stir crazy.

    Health Update 7/26/06

As of right now, I think my ankle sprain is a little bit better. I'm able to put a little weight on it while I am crutchging around. I still feel like I whent 10 rounds with a heavy weight boxing champ. Towards the end of the 6 hour ibuprofen timeline my headache starts up, aches and pains start to reappear. Plus the seatbelt left me with some "nice contusions," so any pants smaller than XXL rub my seatbelt burn and sting. BAGGY is good! Oh...did I mention more bruieses are starting to come to the surface. So today I'm going to try and take it easy. Hopefully any problems can be handled via a phone call or email, because running around to the sheriff's office wiped me out more than I expected.

On another front, here's the beauty of our criminal justice system at work. The guy who hit me is in Jail until August 7th (unless he gets bailed out). He will than be released with a court date, which probably won't be for a year or so. So this person who had no problem driving around allegedly drunk, and allegedly on drugs with a revoked license will be back out on the street. So what is to stop this guy from doing it again? His own conscience? Somehow I'm a little skeptical on that. I could sense the frustration in the officer's voice as we discussed this stuff. Needless to say it's a little frustrating to me too.

    The Police Report

Well, I just stopped at the Ontairio County Sheriff's office so they could take pictures of my injuries. I received a copy of the police report, and here is the list of charges for the other driver.
  • DWI
  • DWAI (Drugs)
  • Operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license
  • Fleeing the scene of an accident
  • Failure to stay right
  • Posession of Marijuana

  • We also stopped by the place where the car was stored, to retrieve stuff that was left in the car and get more pictures of the car (while i reclined in the Air conditioned car). I will add them to the yahoo photo album. We also took some pictures of the injuries on my camera to document things (these are not the most glamourous shots, so I won't be sharing all of them). I am really exhausted at this point, and looking forward to some rest, after calling my Insurance company to work out the claim information.

    DON'T DRIVE DRUNK!!!!

How Not To Get A Helicopter Ride

    The Quick Version:
If you haven't found out yet, I was involved in another car accident Monday morning around 7:22am. I was heading West bound on Route 96 near canandaigua, when an oncoming motorist veered into my lane (for no apparent reason) and struck my car head on. The other motorist ran (on foot) after apparently checking if I was ok(or he claims he checked on me). He was later apprehended by Ontario County Sheriff's Patrol. The other driver claims to have fallen asleep at the wheel. The police are investigating to see if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the accident.

    The rest of the story:
Immediately after the accident I almost blacked out, but once the passenger side door was opened I was able to get some fresh air into the car and get the fumes from the airbag out I was able to get my bearings. Eventually the Fire Department arrived and was able to extricate me from the vehicle using the Jaws of life because the Driver side door was crushed so bad it could not open. I have no Idea how the EMT and Fire department was able to get me from the car seat, strapped in to a neck and back board to stabilize my spine. It's a true testament of to their skill and professionalism. Once I was strapped to the back board the fire department and emt's were able to pivot me around to get me from being seated in the car to a stretcher. From there I was taken to and ambulance where the ambulance crew started an IV, checked my vitals, and preped me for the flight along with the Mercy flight medical team. The ambulance crew drove me from the accident site to the landing zone for mercy flight. From there I was taken directly to the strong emergency department where I went through a battery of cat scans to check for internal bleeding, a series of x-rays to check for any spinal injuries, and some x-rays on my injured hip, knee, and ankle as well as some other tests. Thank god everything came up negative and I was able to go from a back board and neck brace to a normal hospital bed in the ER. I tried to stand up and walk a few times however I got really dizzy, because of dehydration and low blood pressure. So eventually I was given a head cat scan to check for any brain injuries which once again came back negative. Finally after a little food, some more IV fluids and water I was able to get up and walk the best I could with a sprained ankle. The police, EMTs and Victor Farmington Fire Department, Ambulance, and Mercy Flight crews and ER staff at strong were very kind helpful and professional. I am so appreciative of their efforts to take give me the best care possible. I am truly grateful to them, and the sacrifices they make to take care of others. Thank god for airbags, and his guardian angels, because somebody was looking out for me yesterday. Check out the pictures of my car below, and you will see what I mean.

The Real Best Of Is In Town

After doing a 3 to 4 weeks of my mix, I decided it was time to get a dish of Best Of Volume 2. The cool thing about this round is it has a little older material, so It can easily become very athletic. It's also good for newbies because we get to work on the basics for a little whil prior to getting back into the fun stuff like Capoeira. Monday was a great class, with lots of energy and I'm looking forward to a full week of new material and new fun.
